COVID-19 coronavirus

March 13, 2020

For general inquiries regarding COVID-19, please call 811.

If you recently returned from travel outside Canada or have symptoms – cough, fever, fatigue or difficulty breathing:

Avoid non-essential travel outside Canada until further notice. Avoid all cruise ship travel. The Medical Officer of Health suggests anyone returning to Canada after March 12 should self-isolate for 14 days and monitor for symptoms. If symptoms develop (cough, fever, fatigue or difficulty breathing), stay home and call Health Link 811 for instructions and testing. Do not go to the ER or doctor’s office.

Trustworthy resources for Canadians:

If you are concerned about COVID-19, stay at home and call 811.

Doctors test potential COVID-19 patients based on risk factors, not fear.

COVID-19 anxiety is causing Canadian medical services to be overwhelmed by people who don’t need to access these services. The risk to the individual remains low (80% of infected people will have mild symptoms and should simply stay home). But the threat to social stability is worrying. Public panic is driving unpredictable crowd behaviour in an era of unprecedented health anxiety. The mantra for most of us is: Stay home. Do nothing.

COVID-19 is flooding the media because medical professionals are focused on trying to slow the spread of it in our communities. Not because your individual risk is substantial.

So who needs to be tested?

Use this self-assessment tool to help determine whether you should be tested for COVID-19. You can complete this assessment for yourself or on behalf of someone else, if they are not able.

Take the Self-Assessment test

Thank you for sharing this info. Maybe some checking stations should be set up so more people can be tested quicker. I understand That Edmonton has a driver thru station set up. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to remind people that they don’t need to hoard. Everyone deserves the right to provided essentials for themselves and their families. Not sure what people are doing with toilet paper and paper products-making dresses perhaps. Thanks again for sharing info
